2024 Agribusiness Catalog

VARIABLE FREQUENCY DRIVES

VARIABLE TORQUE VFD Requirements: • Complete Table D1 of the "Agribusiness Incentive Catalog Supplemental Data Sheet" for these measures. Complete Table D2 for "Irrigation Well Pump" (AG4949). • For the "VFD Application" column, enter "Primary Use Water Pump," "Secondary Use Water Pump," "Irrigation Well Pump," "Ventilation/Circulation Fan," or "Process Pump." • For the "Controls Before VFD" column, enter "Outlet Control Valve," "Bypass Valve," "Discharge Damper," "Inlet Guide Vanes," "On/Off," "None," or "Other" and then describe. • Primary Use Water System includes any direct well water pumping for waterer or cleaning needs. • Secondary Use Water System includes a pump distributing the warm water from the output of a well water plate-cooler for reuse purposes. • Process Pump category can include a slurry pump or other process driven pump needs on a farm. • VFD must be installed on a centrifugal or axial flow pump or fan, i.e., a variable torque load used to control a process on your farm. • See measure descriptions below for minimum annual operating hours for each VFD application. • The pump or fan may not exceed 500 horsepower. • Redundant or back-up units do not qualify. Routine replacement of existing VFDs do not qualify. • Individual motors controlled by a VFD may not exceed 500 horsepower. VFDs controlling motors larger than 500 HP may be eligible for a custom incentive. • VFD speed must be automatically controlled by differential pressure, flow, temperature, or other variable signal. Units installed only to allow soft starts are not eligible. • The system controlled must have significant load diversity that will result in savings through motor speed variation. • Incentives for Ventilation/Circulation Fan VFDs (MMID AG3777) are not available in addition to Ventilation Fan with VSD incentives (MMIDs AG5089 and AG5095) on pages 30-31. • VFDs may not be beneficial in pump systems where static head makes up a large portion of the total system head. It is also important that the load on the system vary over time to take advantage of the savings that a VFD can provide. Be sure to understand these aspects of your system and discuss them with the equipment vendor in advance of applying VFD technology.
