Contractor knowledge/experience considerations • Can you provide references from customers with similar heat pump systems? • Have you participated in manufacturer training for the system you would install? • Do you know about available rebates, and will you help apply for them? • Will you be using any subcontractors? If so, who are they and what will they be doing? • Will you provide training for me on how to properly use and maintain the system? Equipment considerations • Am I likely to save money on my heating costs and how much might I save? • Will you do a heating load calculation? • Are you familiar with the Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships (NEEP) cold climate heat pump list? • What type of indoor units are you recommending, where will they be located, and why? • What type of thermostat do you recommend? o See the section on Controlling Your Heat Pump for more information. • Do you provide a warranty and how long is it? Installation considerations • Where will you mount the outdoor unit(s) and how? o Make sure you approve of the location of the indoor and outdoor units. o Ensure the outdoor unit is level, on a pad and elevated above the snow line. o See section on Protecting Your Outdoor Unit for more information. • If exterior “line sets” (piping) will be visible, where will they be placed? o Confirm with your contractor the refrigerant line is UV protected on the full length of the line set with rigid cover, UV tape, or both. o Also make sure any penetrations are properly sealed. • Will I need any electrical service upgrades to accommodate the heat pumps? o If yes, will I need to hire my own electrician? • Do I have or need an Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV), which can help maintain humidity levels and bring in fresh air, and if so, how might my heat pump best integrate with an ERV?
