FAQ/Myth
Answer/Response
No. Heat pumps only extract heat from air, and do not actually move the air itself. If a fresh-air intake is something you are interested in, discuss options such as Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERVs) with your contractor.
Do heat pumps bring in fresh air?
It can vary, depending on how much the system is used and how regularly it is checked or serviced. Generally, the average lifespan is 15-20 years which is similar to a furnace lifespan, but individual units may vary and last longer depending on how they’re used and how well they are maintained. High efficiency units qualify for rebates or tax credits because they use less energy, have lower operating costs, provide better cooling and dehumidification, and may provide more heat at lower temperatures. A dual-fuel configuration may be the best option for your home but often these systems wouldn’t qualify for rebates or tax credits. Be sure to tell your contractor how you would like to use your system to ensure it’s sized properly. Verify what efficiency levels are needed and if a rebate, tax credit, or electric rate discount is available prior to installation. Yes. Nearly all homes and businesses are capable of being heated and cooled entirely with heat pumps. There are several variables your local contractor will take into consideration to recommend the best heat pump option for your home or business. If you’re looking for an entire-home or business heating solution, be sure to let your contractor know. Large homes and buildings may be a better fit for a ground source heat pump or may require multiple outdoor units. Most heat pump outdoor units run around 45 decibels, like your refrigerator, and some may occasionally go up to 76 decibels, like a vacuum cleaner. You will likely not notice your heat pump any more than you would your central air conditioner. If noise is a concern look for outdoor units with low decibels, sound insulation, or locate the outdoor unit away from bedrooms. Heat pumps can do more than just provide heating or cooling. High efficiency heat pumps can perform the same functions as five different appliances: heaters, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, ceiling fans, and room air filters. Though not all heat pumps will provide all of these benefits. Focus on Energy does not provide rebates for self-installed heat pumps. There are some mini-splits sold as DIY opportunities. Installation of a non-sealed refrigerant system without proper certification is a violation of the Clean Air Act of 1995.
